Kennedy expressed his concern over the harsh treatment Martin received for the traffic ticket, and political pressure was quickly set in motion. For the next thirteen months the black people in Montgomery walked to work or obtained lifts from the small car-owning black population of the city. King's impact can also be seen in the arts, as his words and actions have inspired countless works of literature, music, and film that continue to touch the hearts and minds of people around the world.
His message of nonviolence and peaceful protest has inspired countless activists and leaders to stand up against oppression and discrimination. When asked to leave or sit in the “colored” section, they just remained seated, subjecting themselves to verbal and sometimes physical abuse. He, too, became a successful minister.
Even though King was following his father’s footsteps, he rebelled against Martin Sr.’s more conservative influence by drinking beer and playing pool while at college.
In June 2000, more than two years after Ray died, the U.S. Justice Department released a report that dismissed the alternative theories of King’s death.
