And his band, dubbed “The Tigernips,” follow along every twist and turn allowing raucousness or solitude, desire or irony.
Now, Stelth Ulvang (this is his mom-given, real Norwegian name) is living in the high desert of Bishop, California, with hummingbirds and crows circling the little house on the edge of town. His recent LP, “An Evening at Macri Park,” has drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Rufus Wainwright.
“He’s a great songwriter – raw and beautiful,” said Ulvang.
Also accompanying Ulvang is bassist Dave Drago, a longtime collaborator from Rochester, N.Y., rounding out the trio.
Ulvang’s love for the unpredictable is reflected in his latest album, “Stelth Ulvang and the Tigernips,” recorded live to tape in New Orleans between legs of a Lumineers tour.
“We’ve stayed in touch all these years, meeting up in different states,” Ulvang shares. Stelth Ulvang wanted to make a record with all of the squeaks of a piano bench, with new notes and freshly learned tunes, and with the pops and hisses of humanness. “It’s funny to think we’ve known each other for so long, and this is the first time we’re all in Keene together.”
Ulvang’s journey from wandering traveler to acclaimed musician has been far from traditional.
He wanted to get back to recording live, through tape, with all the mess-ups at stake.
Born and raised in Fort Collins, Colorado, his formative years of music always spiraled back to the folk genre.

I'm bound to hunger by your unruly flip

Somehow he never knew, the thing we sought

Oh the things we fear, for them to hit the ground

And I can't keep all the thoughts that wash my way ahead of me

Just to fear an enemy, oh to fear itself

And even a hair that grows and grazes on each side of me

How to just let it be, it eats the love in me

From train hopping to the stage: Singer/songwriter Stelth Ulvang brings his boundless energy to Keene
KEENE, N.H.
(MyKeeneNow) – For Stelth Ulvang, music and travel have been inseparable since his early days hitchhiking across the U.S. with no budget and no plan—only the desire to see the world. It almost felt like inescapable serendipity. And it was this that drew him to The Deslondes Studio and a beautiful band in New Orleans.
A soulful alt-country record built with the beatniks ‘first thought, best thought’ in mind. Now living in Bishop, California, and father to a three-year-old son, Ulvang can reflect on how those experiences have shaped him and looks forward to what’s next.
“We learned these songs for this little tour,” he said of the trio performing in Keene.
He continues to write, day in, day out, and when he tours he doesn’t skip a beat. He traveled across oceans on boats and across America on trains and hitchhiked across the world, using music as a means to keep him traveling. Like a goat in a tree, he will make his way over precarious obstacles to find human connection at even the largest venues.
And though these songs on his upcoming record, solely named “Stelth Ulvang and the Tigernips,” are teeming with relatability, pop hooks, and fervor, they also carry an open sensitivity.
I just wanted to travel, see places.” One such adventure brought him to Boston, where a chance encounter outside the Middle East club resulted in a long-standing friendship with Emily and Brian Daigle of Keene.
“We met while I was trying to get into a show without tickets,” he said.
Nearly two decades later, Ulvang’s path crosses with the Daigles once again—this time in Keene.
“I’m excited to see the Northeast – there’s something really nice right now about playing in places I’ve I haven’t before.”

Nicole Colson
Nicole Colson is the editor-in-chief of MyKeeneNow. While he now plays to sold-out crowds with The Lumineers, his solo work remains rooted in the unpolished, adventurous energy of his youth in his native Colorado.
His performances are an unpredictable mix of instruments—piano, guitar and accordion among them—capturing the same chaotic spirit he embraced while busking on street corners.
“I like to jump around a lot,” he says. Busking on street corners kept him paid for five years, and you can see that draw to closeness from arenas to house shows.
