Who is Lip‑Bu Tan?

Lip‑Bu Tan is the Malaysian‑born American executive who became Intel’s CEO in March 2025, bringing decades of semiconductor and venture capital expertise.

He’s renowned for steering Cadence Design Systems to market prominence and founding the influential VC firm, Walden International. Tan is in the spotlight now as he leads Intel through aggressive restructuring, including a 15% workforce reduction and new return‑to‑office policies, amid growing political scrutiny most recently from Donald Trump and Senator Tom Cotton over his past investments in Chinese tech firms.

He also founded Walden International, a global venture capital firm that has backed many successful tech startups.

Tan is famous for his deep knowledge of the chip industry and his bold investments in high-tech companies. Born in Malaysia and raised in Singapore, he is now the CEO of Intel Corporation, one of the world's largest chipmakers.

Controversies

• In July and August 2025, Lip-Bu Tan has been the subject of significant political controversy following his appointment as Intel’s CEO.
• US Senator Tom Cotton sent a letter to Intel’s board raising “serious concerns” about Tan’s extensive financial ties to Chinese tech firms during his time at Walden International and Cadence Design Systems.
• The controversy intensified when President Donald Trump publicly demanded Tan’s immediate resignation in a post on Truth Social, citing a conflict of interest.

  He has significant public company board experience, currently serving on the boards of Credo Technology Group and Schneider Electric.

  Tan holds a Bachelor of Science in physics from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, a Master of Science in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of San Francisco.
