The veteran human rights advocate Professor Mesfin Wolde-Mariam described Debebe as “a wonderful and kind person who hates terrorist act of any kind.” Writers and actors remembered him as a model of dignity, artistic discipline, and courage. Many of his students stated that he was not just a teacher but a caring mentor who encouraged bold thinking and self-confidence.

While in prison, Debebe was admired for his strength and dignity—he continued to speak out against injustice and refused to confess to crimes he did not commit. This training helped him master pantomime and modern stage techniques, while staying rooted in Ethiopian culture. Instructors at school and community theaters noticed his passion and gave him opportunities to perform and lead.

In September 2011, Debebe was imprisoned on charges of alleged ties to terrorism and held in solitary, incommunicado detention for more than three months. Instead, they pushed him forward, making him work even harder to develop his skills.

His passion for acting grew stronger during his secondary education. Many times people follow what artists do and it is very easy to transmit important messages to them.

These works not only boosted his own reputation but also placed Ethiopia on the map of international cinema.

Ethiopian and Foreign Collaborations

Debebe Eshetu’s collaborations with both Ethiopian and foreign filmmakers are legendary. After a while he fell in prison and suffered a lot but he never regretted for having taken that dangerous path where he however managed to survive.

He worked in Ethiopian classics as well as big international productions. Those who knew him say he was a generous mentor who listened deeply and always made time to encourage others. During his detention Debebe wrote a book about his predicament and ordeal in jail called ‘the Challenge of My Conviction’, ‘Ye’emnetee Fetena’ in Amharic.

He introduced updated curricula, drawing from his studies abroad, and emphasized the importance of discipline, creativity, and community service in the arts. His early life, education, and inspirations helped him make a lasting mark on Ethiopian theater and culture.
