He was 47 years old.

The Jack Kerouac tribute began on the afternoon of April 4th with a screening of the thirty-minute film “Pull My Daisy” by Robert Frank. He urged the audience to do the same. “I start off each day with a glass of cold water and a cold shower. Leo de Natale, reporter for The Beverly Times wrote, “Twenty years ago, the three were Bohemians, the beatniks.

Today, they are men in their forties lost in the shuffle of an age of acceptance.” de Natale continued that the two “spoke fondly of their departed friend Kerouac. Thiele left the record company over the dispute and received the master tape in the parting deal, the album finally officially released in June 1959.

Pat Thomas wrote liner notes for this new vinyl edition, although they haven’t ended up on the release; Rock and the Beat Generation made them available to read on Substack.

He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1922 and spent much of his life there. At the time, McHale was teaching a course on “Jack Kerouac and the Beat Writers.” Kerouac passed away a few years prior in 1969, suffering from an esophageal hemorrhage, which was complicated due to cirrhosis. “I’d Rather Be Thin Than Famous” is full of good humour, a reminder that there is more to Kerouac than “tortured genius”.

Jean-Louis Lebris de Kérouac, known as Jack Kerouac, was a novelist and poet of French-Canadian ancestry.

When Kerouac finally broke through with the release of “On The Road, he was faced with challenges presented by the fame that followed as he tried to live up to the image portrayed in his novels and facing criticism from the literary establishment for being part of what was considered a fad. Corso stated that the men were able to survive the hostility they received and went on to become poets, whereas women were often institutionalized for their lack of conformity and submitted to electroshock treatment.

Here at times he reads excerpts of poems, including the engaging “I Had a Slouch Hat Too One Time” [a section from his poem “Orizaba 210 Blues” from his collection Book of Blues (1995)] and “The Wheel of the Quivering Meat Conception” [from the 211th chorus of Mexico City Blues (1959)].

Kerouac’s voice is warm and melodious, and he turns in some charming performances: “The Sounds of the Universe Coming in My Window” and “McDougal Street Blues” are brought alive by Kerouac’s fine descriptions of daily life.

He never completed the book.

He would go on to publish additional novels, many of which used settings based on Lowell – including “Doctor Sax,” “The Subterraneans,” “The Dharma Bums” and his final great work, “Big Sur.” He settled in Florida with his wife, Stella Sampas, and his mother, where he died in 1969 at age 47. He has been cited as an influence by countless writers and musicians, including The Doors, Bob Dylan, and Patti Smith.

Our Review: although there is no new material, this re-issue will undoubtedly appeal to collectors due to the new colour vinyl.

If you haven’t heard the album before, these are relaxed recordings of Kerouac reading to the backing of Steve Allen’s “cocktail” piano.

Allen Ginsberg, with his leg propped up on a table after suffering a break, remained a calming force in the group, despite persistent antagonizing by Corso.

The Boston Globe reported on the event, writing that Corso, “the tough-talking poet” had “berated the student audience with obscenities between tugs of Vodka.” Corso and Peter Orlovsky debated Kerouac’s drinking habits on stage.

Larry Kiley accompanied the reading on guitar. Peter Orlovsky quietly sewed in the corner.
