Von Bismarck bis Picasso: Erinnerungen und Bekenntnisse. Kulterman writes that his writing exceeded the bounds of good taste and was unflatteringly confessional. At his best, he was attuned to the cultural currents of the eras about which he wrote. He characterized the religious painting of Spain, for example as reflecting the dichotomies of the Spanish monarchy: Catholicism and absolutism.

Richard Muther held B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His works have been translated into several languages and are used throughout the industrial world.

Recipient of the prestigious Gilbreth Medal for outstanding contributions to industrial engineering, Richard Muther has also received Reed-Apple Award, the Materials Handling Award of the Society for the Advancement of Management, the Honor Award of the International Material Management Society, and an Engineering Citation from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

These books were among the first surveys of modern art in Europe and were praised by the writers Hugo von Hofmannstahl and his friend, Rainer Maria Rilke. On learning that Whistler intended to present his etchings from the International Art Exhibition to the Print Room of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich as a gift, he wrote to Whistler in September 1892.

He also contributed to four popular handbooks, two encyclopedias, and authored more than 100 technical papers and magazine articles. His writing style became particularly popular with art journalists. However, he did little primary research (he was rather anti-academic) on his artists and his books are full of mistakes and wandering personal interpretation.
