His solo career quickly gained traction and recognition and soon after won first place at the Altenburg International Baroque Trumpet Competition in Bad Säckengen, Germany.
Niklas’ career included appearances with many leading musicians and conductors, including Cecilia Bartoli, Zubin Mehta, John Elliot Gardiner, Heinz Holliger, András Schiff, and Gustav Leonhardt.

Swedish trumpeter Niklas Eklund was born into a musical family in Gothenburg in 1969.

After five years as solo trumpeter with the Basle Radio Symphony Orchestra, Niklas Eklund left the orchestra in the autumn of 1996 to further his career as a soloist. The series confirmed his undisputed status, both as a technician and an interpreter, with American Record Guide noting of the final volume how his “virtuoso skills, consistently sweet tone, purity of intonation, and sense of ease rank him as the world’s best.”

Since then he has appeared with several leading musicians and conductors such as Cecilia Bartoli, Zubin Metha, John Eliot Gardiner, Heinz Holliger, Andras Schiff, Eric Ericson, Ivan Fisher and Gustav Leonhardt. He also held the position as invited professor at the Laval Université as well as giving trumpet lessons at M c Gill University (Montreal).
For Naxos, Niklas Eklund has recorded a magnificent five-volume overview of the Baroque trumpet, (sold over 400 000 ex.) embracing composers as diverse as Handel, Torelli, Sweelinck, Vivaldi, Haydn and Molter.

Niklas was a third-generation trumpeter from Götteborg, Sweden. Trained at the School of Music and Musicology of Göteborg University. '... In 1996, he changed his path and pursued his career as a soloist. In 1996, Eklund was the first prize winner of the first Altenburg International Baroque trumpet competition, hold in Bad Säckingen (Germany). In the year 2005, Eklund was exclusively touring together with Cecilia Bartoli as a soloist performing at some of the most prestigious Concerts venues in the world such as Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony Hall, Berlin Philharmonic Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam Eklund played Solo trumpet with the famous Violons du Roy in the years 2006-2008.
Grammy Awards nominated trumpeter Niklas Eklund, was born in Göteborg (Gothenburg) in 1969. He was a baroque trumpet and historically informed performance expert, and he featured prominently in John Eliot Gardiner's 'Bach Pilgrimage' performances and recordings.
Niklas Eklund died on 10 April 2025, aged fifty-six.

Niklas Eklund, the renowned Swedish trumpet player, has died aged 56.
Born in Göteborg in 1969, Eklund received initial instruction on the trumpet from his father, Bengt Eklund, before going on to study at Göteborg’s School of Music and Musicology, and subsequently at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis under the direction of Edward H.
Tarr. Eklund played a permanent part in Sir John Eliot Gardiner Bach Pilgrimage performances and recordings (Archive DG) in year 2000.
Besides giving concerts in Sweden and Europe, he is appearing as a guest performer and teacher in the USA, Australia, the Ukraine, Russia and New Zealand.
In the season 2007-2008, he played and toured worldwide with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
