However, Davis started to develop a fear that another inventor would steal his idea, so he reached out to Levi Strauss to help him make new pants.

During the next few years, Jacob Davis moved between San Francisco, Maine, and Canada, and then back to San Francisco.

In 1868, Davis and his family moved toVirginia City, Nevada.

Reno, Nevada

Later in 1868, Jacob Davis and his family settled inReno, Nevada, where he invested in a brewery and almost loses everything.

The following year, Davis opened a tailoring business, specializing in tents, wagon covers, and horse blankets for the crews building the railroad.

His basic fabrics were heavy-duty cotton “duck” and “denim,” which he purchased from Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco.

A year later, Jacob Davis expanded his business to make work overall clothing for railroad workers, miners, and farmers.

One customer asked Davis to make a stronger pair of pants for her husband.

He also traded tobacco products and shipped pork wholesale to Virginia. Strauss agreed, and on May 20, 1873, a patent was issued for the use of metal rivets. In 1858, he left California and headed to Western Canada in search of better job opportunities. He continued to work at the factory until the end of his life, overseeing not only the production of pants but also other garments, including shirts and denim overalls.

Therefore, he decided to rename the company “Levi Strauss & Co.”

In 1871, Levi got a letter in the mail from a customer who was a Russian Immigrant and tailor. His family moved to New York in 1846 once his father was diagnosed with tuberculosis two years prior.
