The hope was that this process might be used to produce a cheap and abundant substitute for wool as a raw material for the textile industry and the company Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) were so interested in this idea that they built a pilot plant in Ardeer, Scotland, to produce a textile fibre from the main protein component of monkeynuts.
Aaron Klug worked on ribonuclease, and Andrew Donald Booth developed some of the earliest computers to help with the computation. He wanted to know whether X-ray crystallography could reveal the structure of materials found in living systems such as the fibres that make up hair, nail and wool. An inorganic origin, as a result of processes in the early solar system, said Bernal, could mean that meteorites provided the raw materials for the first synthesis of life on Earth (see cosmic collisions, biological effects).

After assisting in the preparations for D-Day with work on the structure of the proposed landing sites and the bocage countryside beyond, Bernal landed, according to C. P. Snow, at Normandy on the afternoon of D-Day+1 in the uniform of an Instructor-Lieutenant Royal Navy to record the effectiveness of the plans.
Yet they were also known to be composed of small chemicals called amino acids. Whether there are some general characteristics which would apply not only to life on this planet with its very special set of physical conditions, but to life of any kind, is an interesting, but so far purely theoretical question.

John Desmond BernalFRS[7] (bər-NAHL; 10 May 1901 – 15 September 1971) was an Irish scientist who pioneered the use of X-ray crystallography in molecular biology.
As one of the main centres of the textile industry, Leeds seemed to be the ideal place in which to carry out this research into wool fibres, but Astbury did not share his mentor's enthusiasm for the move north. In 1965, she became the first woman to receive the Order of Merit and, in 1976 became Chancellor of Bristol University, and President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

Using their method, the Braggs had been able to determine the arrangement of atoms in simple inorganic substances such as diamond and rock salt, but now Williams Bragg had set his sights higher.
