William B. Ashworth, Jr., Consultant for the History of Science, Linda Hall Library and Associate Professor emeritus, Department of History, University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Ohm had believed that his publications would lead to his receiving an offer of a university post before having to return to Cologne but by the time he was due to begin teaching again in September 1827 he was still without such an offer. Using a compass needle placed near a wire as a measure of electrical current (ammeters had not yet been invented), Ohm discovered that, for a given wire, the current through the wire is proportional to the strength of the battery (we would say the voltage), but that for other wires, the current might be different for the same voltage.
Internat. He continued teaching, and devoted the remainder of his career to developing a molecular theory of electricity. This may have no simple explanation but rather be the result of a number of different contributary factors. A detailed study of the conceptual framework used by Ohm in formulating Ohm's law is given in [6].
It is interesting that Ohm presents his theory as one of contiguous action, a theory which opposed the concept of action at a distance. London: Ingram, Cooke and Co. p. The other two survivors were his younger brother Martin (who later became a well-known mathematician), and his sister Elizabeth Barbara.
Langsdorf, however, advised Ohm to continue with his studies of mathematics on his own, advising Ohm to read the works of Leonhard Euler, Pierre-Simon Laplace and Sylvestre François Lacroix. This work, the germ of which had appeared during the two preceding years in the journals of Schweigger and Poggendorff, has exerted an important influence on the development of the theory and applications of electric current.
The Jesuit Gymnasium of Cologne failed to continue to keep up the high standards that it had when Ohm began to work there so, by 1825, he decided that he would try again to attain the job he really wanted, namely a post in a university. ISBN 0195216636
The voltage may be thought of as the pressure that pushes the current through the wire. See [10] for details of the dispute between Ohm and Seebeck. Rather than concentrate on his studies he spent much time dancing, ice skating, and playing billiards. His father, Johann Wolfgang Ohm, was a locksmith while his mother, Maria Elizabeth Beck, was the daughter of a tailor.
When Germany issued a series of postage stamps in 1994, commemorating famous (German) scientific discoveries, Ohm's law was one of the honorees (first image), although they chose to illustrate a resistor rather than Ohm. The large symbol on the plinth of the statue is the Greek letter omega, the symbol for the ohm, the international (SI) unit of resistance.

The boys' father taught them from their early childhood, bringing them to a high standard in mathematics, physics, chemistry and philosophy even as he hoped they would follow in his footsteps as a locksmith.
