Ali ibn Abi Talib (born around 600 CE – died 661 CE) was a very important figure in Islam. In early 2004, he was encouraged to compile a collection of English-language spiritual songs, which has culminated in ‘Songs of Innocence,’ an intensely personal journey into the experiential dimensions of Islam.
He had broad shoulders and a long white beard.
Many sources describe Ali as cheerful, gentle, and generous. He is also remembered as a very skilled speaker.

Talib al-Habib was born in London in 1976 and grew up in Manchester, before moving to South Africa with his family for a ten year stay.
He is also an author of three books of Islamic spirituality and ethics.
Talib has been a student of the sacred sciences for several years, which he pursues both through the traditional method of sitting with a shaykh, as well as through more contemporary approaches.

He was one of the first people to write down the divine messages.
Ali is also known for passing on hundreds of sayings from Muhammad, called hadiths. Since 2014, he has been engaged in a complete reading, commentary and analysis of the Ihya Ulum al-Din of Imam Ghazali, one of the greatest masterworks of the Islamic tradition, and has to date completed the first third of the forty books with his students.
He is the author of several books, most notably Shedding Light on the Dawn, as well as being a poet and traditional singer better known by his pseudonym Talib al-Habib, with three well-received nasheed albums to his name.
In 2022, Shaykh Asim was awarded an OBE by her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in her Platinum Jubilee honours for theological leadership and services to the Muslim community during the COVID pandemic of 2020/1.
He hopes to one day continue his studies at the classical centres of learning. Here are a few:
- Abu al-Hasan: Means "father of Hasan," named after his oldest son.
- Abu Turab: Means "father of the dust." Muhammad gave him this title when he saw Ali sleeping covered in dust.
- Amir al-Mu'minin: Means "prince of the faithful." This is a very special title, especially for Shias, who believe it belongs only to Ali.
- Asadullah: Means "lion of God."
- Haydar: Also means "lion," showing his bravery.
In Muslim Culture
Ali is a hugely important figure in Islamic culture, second only to Muhammad.
This led to a major split, dividing Muslims into two main groups: Shia and Sunni.
Shias believe that Muhammad chose Ali to lead Islam. He was known for treating all Muslims fairly.
Names and Titles
He began his career as a singer in social media platforms like YouTube at a very young age at the age of 16. He later returned to the UK in early 2002.
His distinctive style of inshad arises from a ten year childhood association with the Manchester Boy’s Choir, where he received vocal and technical training.
He began composing spiritual poetry and songs at the age of sixteen, and has continued to do so ever since.
He was also the first ShiaImam.
Biography
Ali was born in Mecca around 600 CE. His parents were Abu Talib and Fatimah bint Asad. They led several uprisings against rulers over time. Ali later married Muhammad's daughter, Fatima. Across almost all parts of Islam, Ali is seen as a perfect example of important virtues, especially justice. He began composing spiritual poetry and songs.
He is married with two young daughters.
