In 1532, Father Jerome moved to Somasca, a city between Venice and Milan, and co-founded the Company of the Servants of the Poor (later called the Order of the Somascan Fathers).

In 1569 the first six members made their profession, and Gambarana was made first superior general. Jerome was born in Venice, Italy. He was the son of Angelo Emiliani and Eleonore Mauroceni. He joined the army and in 1508 defended Castelnuovo against the League of Cambray. He was taken prisoner during that battle and was miraculously liberated. He had made a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Treviso, in fulfillment of a vow he had made to Our Lady for his returning safely. He was appointed as the Venetian Magistrate of Castelnuovo, but only stayed in that position a short time, to supervise the education of his nephews back in Venice. He spent his spare time studying theology and to the works of charity.
By then, Father Jerome had a heart for charity. His devotion to those suffering from the plague was so great that he himself contracted the disease and died a martyr of the plague in early February, 1537.
Saint Jerome was, at first, seduced by the glory and honor one can attain from the world. Although not an excellent student, he was sociable, friendly, cheerful, strong-minded, and enthusiastic.
When he was a teenager, Jerome joined the military and let ambition for honors outweigh his desire to grow in virtue.
Two priests, Alessandro Besuzio and Agostino Bariso, now joined him in his labours of charity, and in 1532 Jerome founded a religious society, placing the motherhouse at Somascha, a secluded hamlet between Milan and Bergamo. The general resides in Rome at S. Girolamo della Carita.
