Later Activism
From late 1965 through 1967, King expanded his civil rights efforts into other larger American cities, including Chicago and Los Angeles.
His speech "I've Been to the Mountaintop" showcased his unwavering commitment to the movement, even in the face of danger. However, King was personally criticized by Black and white clergy alike for taking risks and endangering the children who attended the demonstration. Both King’s and Nixon’s homes were attacked.

In addition to the boycott, members of the Black community took legal action against the city ordinance that outlined the segregated transit system. When asked to leave or sit in the “colored” section, they just remained seated, subjecting themselves to verbal and sometimes physical abuse.

Although, from an early age, King resented religious emotionalism and questioned literal interpretations of scripture, he nevertheless greatly admired black social gospel proponents such as his father who saw the church as a instrument for improving the lives of African Americans.
