When President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, unveiled his new Cabinet yesterday, one familiar name stood out, Bright Msaka, SC, now the newly appointed Minister of Education, Science and Technology.
For many Malawians, the name Bright Msaka is synonymous with discipline, eloquence, and excellence in public service.
A true leadership that can be trusted.
Here is the man, an accomplished technocrat who went on the ground, attempted once to run for a parliamentary seat and won; he is an accomplished politician who knows how to mingle with the grassroot party structures and deliver. That is how Bright, the wiseman from the east operates, clean and smart.
Msaka first served the nation as a diplomat, representing Malawi as High Commissioner to Canada and later to the United Kingdom, where he also covered several European and Nordic countries.
He was born 4 October 1959.[1] Between 2000 and 2003 he was ambassador to Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.[1] He was appointed as the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, having been appointed to the position in 2014 by former president of Malawi Peter Mutharika.
Born on 4 October 1959 in Machinga District, Msaka's journey from a rural classroom to the corridors of power is a story of determination and intellect.
He began his early education at Nkasaulo FP School in Machinga before proceeding to Zomba Catholic Secondary School, where his sharp mind and love for learning began to shine.
He has previously served as Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, and later as Minister of Education, Science and Technology, a role he now returns to.
In his previous tenure at the Ministry of Education - Malawi, Msaka championed the improvement of school infrastructure, science laboratories, and teacher development programmes.
He priotises the nations interest over his personal gains. But Bright, the wise man from the East rose to that position in the forties and lasted for a good nine years as the top civil servant.
From 2013 to 2022, the civil service has been led by 5 different people, most of them in their retirement age or coming from retirement to serve just for a short period and get kicked out but Bright, the wise man from the East survived 9 years at the helm of civil service despite his tender age and challenging position.
That is what we call leadership.
Of late, we have heard of stories coming from Ministry of Lands involving the cabinet minister who was fired from the position, this is one of the key ministries, Bright the wiseman from the East served and left without a dent. His diplomatic career earned him a reputation for professionalism and calm leadership.
Back home, he rose through the ranks of the civil service to become Chief Secretary to the Government, the highest administrative post in the public sector, a position that placed him at the heart of Malawi’s policy and governance machinery.
When he ventured into politics under the Democratic Progressive Party - DPP, Msaka continued to make his mark.
A President must know very well international politics.

Here is the man who was brought into the public service to lead as Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC), in his forties, and managed to lead the public service with a remarkable success for Nine (9) solid years.
For the record, we have seen several Secretaries to the President and Cabinet who have been recalled from retirement and only served for a short time before they are fired and/or compromised professionally — talk of Hawa Ndilowe, George Mkondiwa, Justice Muhara, Zangazanga Chikhosi and now Collen Zamba.
His maturity and wisdom have always befitted that of a true leader and his calmness, composition and wisdom helped him to excel in his career as an accomplished ambassador. He advocated for policies aimed at reducing the pupil–teacher ratio and improving access to quality education, especially for girls and children in rural areas.
Now, as he takes up the education portfolio once again, the expectations are high.
Yet Bright the wiseman from the East as Minister of Energy stirred MAREP Phase 8 successfully and finished clean.He resisted the temptations that comes along with ministerial posts and maintained his integrity. He knows best how the Government machinery operates.
