Early Life and Education
Habib Umar was born in Tarim, Hadhramaut, Yemen, into a distinguished family of scholars and descendants of the Prophet Muhammad, through Imam al-Husayn and ‘Ali Zayn al-‘Abidin.
Bin Hafiz then traveled to the Hejaz and studied several books with scholars, including Al-Habib Abdul Qadir bin Ahmad al-Saqqaf, Al-Habib Ahmed Mashur al-Haddad, and Al-Habib Attas al-Habashi.
At the age of 15, Bin Hafiz began to teach, while continuing to study and receive lessons.
After returning to Tarim, bin Hafiz established Dar al-Mustafa, an Islamic educational seminary.
Through Dar al-Mustafa and his travels, he has mentored thousands of students and inspired Muslims worldwide. His connection to Indonesia is strengthened through his online presence, facilitated through Muwasala. Many older ribats have also been revived, including those of the cities of Mukalla’ and ‘Aynat, as well as that of al-Shihr, mentioned previously.
Dar al-Mustafa and its branches continue to grow, and now receives students from all regions of the world. More recently, it has established a short-term program called The Dowra, which also has an online component to serve students worldwide.
Recent Travels
Habib `Umar constantly travels to convey the Prophetic message and to call people to Allah.
He is founder and dean of the Dar al-Mustafa Islamic seminary in Tarim, Hadhramaut, and serves as a leading teacher and influencer in the Ba Alawi Sufi tradition. He is especially celebrated for his holistic approach, combining sacred learning, moral refinement, and community service. In 2001, a sister institution, Dar Al-Zahra, was inaugurated, expanding religious instruction to females.
Within this organisation, Habib Umar is a reference point for all matters related to religious affairs. He is the recipient of the King Faisal International Prize for Islamic Studies (2016) and the Sheikh Zayed Award for Human Fraternity (2021), but worth far more than any award is the testimony of many that Habib Umar precisely emulates the character of the Prophet ﷺ.
Habib Umar bin Hafiz
Habib Umar bin Hafiz (Arabic: حبيب عمر بن حفيظ; born 27 May 1963) is a renowned Yemeni Sunni and Sufi Islamic scholar, spiritual guide, educator, and author.
He descends from a family tracing its lineage directly to the Prophet Muhammad. He also studied under Shaikh al-Habib Muhammad al-Haddar, who gave him his daughter’s hand in marriage.
He has connected to the chains of transmission of the scholars of these regions, and has also participated in many Islamic conferences & summits. He has also spoken at Cambridge University on the need for such a dialogue.
In July 2008, he partnered with Muslim Aid Australia as founder of Yemen-based NGO Al-Rafah Charitable Society to address issues of poverty and hunger and lack of sufficient health care that affect areas of Tarim.
In 2011, Bin Hafiz toured the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States for outreach purposes and da'wah (calling others to Islam).
In 2009, Bin Hafiz was listed at number 33 in The 500 Most Influential Muslims, an annual ranking compiled by Georgetown University’s Prince Al-Waleed Center for Muslim–Christian Understanding and the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre of Jordan.
Bin Hafiz has appeared in the list's top 50 every year since its inaugural publication in 2009.
Writings and publications
Bin Hafiz has many audio and visual publications as well as writings.
His prominent position in the Ba Alawi Tariqah further extends his influence over hundreds of millions of Muslims around the globe.
The Aal Ba Alawi: The Aal Ba Alawi, derived from “Banu Alawi” or “the clan of Alawi”, have called the Hadramaut region in Yemen their home since 4th-century hijri (CE 930) when a member of the Prophet’s ﷺ family emigrated there.
As the number of students increased, the need for a purpose-built building became clear.
Dar al-Mustafa was officially opened in the year 1417 AH (1997 CE). Habib ‘Umar honored his father’s sacrifice by making the opening date 29th Dhu’l-Hijjah, the day on which his father was abducted. His role as a signatory of “A Common Word Between Us and You” has helped to foster understanding between Muslims and Christians.
He delivers regular lectures and khuṭbahs within Hadramawt, and often makes trips abroad.
