At 19, another book was published. I sketched out the sculptural form using a 3D computer program and cut the aluminium with a laser. "For example, when I was six years old, I was already very famous as an artist. "I think it's not really about the cloud, it's about the fact that the art piece is very flexible, it can fit any space, it can change form.

Most children liked to go out and play with their toys or run around. And though having a solo exhibition is quite an achievement for any artist at whatever age, Jordy seems to think of her showcase at Beijing's Capital Museum when she was just six as nothing particularly special.

I also used sewing techniques and inserted the details of jewellery into each layer to represent the urban lifestyle.”

Jordy was born in Chengdu and from an early age was sketching the outlines of buildings. But the real highlight of the show is the Cloud Chandelier, a thinking cloud-like form.

The nebulous chandelier has long become her signature in art and design, and the starting point of this design was when she was asked to do an art piece that addressed the issue of climate change for an exhibition in London.

"I used the cloud as a representative of nature," said Jordy. Depicting parks, shopping malls, playgrounds and cities, each hand-cut piece is unique.

For Jordy, art and architecture are inextricably intertwined.

The following year she gained wider fame with a piece at the Venice Architecture Biennale, “Family Project”, which involved paper cut by hand, and with a partner set up a design and architecture company, Marques & Jordy.

The firm has since done commissions for Hermes, Selfridges, the Design Museum and the Southbank Centre in London and Bloomberg’s headquarters in the British capital.

“My company works in interior design, architecture, furniture design and fashion,” Jordy says.

I aspire to build beautiful things that can engage emotions, like artworks do.”

(Yu Jordy Fu)

Bright and early

Chinese artist Yu Jordy Fu's career has literally been a shooting rocket, launched at a very young age.

Then at 16, she was accepted to St Martin’s College of Art and Design, London, where she obtained a first-class degree in Spatial Design.

Yu Jordy Fu, known to her friends as ‘Jordy’, held her very first solo exhibition at the Beijing Capital Museum when she was only 6. “I like creating inspirations for everyday life.

There’s a Cloud chandelier with LED lights that throw striking shadows on the walls, and a Cloud lamp in laser-cut aluminium resembling the wings of a butterfly while bearing a pattern of Thai elephants.

“The Cloud and Butterfly lamps are meant to be artworks that people can actually use. When we've created something for a client and the client is extremely happy or appreciates it, then I'm proud."

Asked what got her this far, Jordy answered simply: "I think it's important to have a dream and never give up.

I get involved in animal-protection campaigns.”

Among her futuristic furniture and home decor are a Dream sofa – a gorgeous balance of elegance and modern design – the dust-proof Tulip rag and a Butterfly wall fixture with soft and fluid lines.

Also on view are Jordy’s inaugural line of layered evening dresses, similarly contrived with a paper-cutting technique so the silhouette seems architectural, and her oil paintings, both abstract and figurative, rendered in sweeping brushstrokes and very emotive.

“Fire” captures the power of a horse in motion, full of the fire of life that burns inside to escape restraints.

“We’ve designed many five-star resorts, office buildings, shopping malls and private mansions around the world.”

The “Cloud” pieces have become a signature for her, mingling diverse materials and traditional and contemporary techniques to assemble three-dimensional landscapes.

“I’m a creator, but I’m also basically an architect,” Jordy says.
