Following the success of his songs for Justin Bieber, August had the opportunity to work with more artists, like One Direction.

He released his first single “Here Comes Trouble” featuring Busta Rhymes in 2011, and he released his debut album Music of My Life in 2012. He started writing and producing his own music so that he would have songs to show to people.

For this musician, however, it was the environment he grew up in.

“Music was a huge part of everyday life,” August reflects, noting that his Filipino household was steeped in sound—whether it was the crackling of radio stations, the spinning of vinyl records, or, of course, the ever-present karaoke sessions that defined family gatherings.

This drive to prove himself has made him a humble yet confident collaborator—someone who’s quick to listen, but equally eager to take risks when the time is right.

Yet, he doesn’t view his Filipino heritage as a cause, but rather as a part of who he is.

“I champion being Filipino, but I don’t feel the need to be ‘good for a Filipino.’ I’m just good.”

His goal is simple: to be the best he can be, and in doing so, to pave the way for more Filipino creatives to rise to the top without being seen as ‘other.’ “I hope to be good enough that it opens the door for more artists like myself.”

If there’s one lesson August has learned over the years, it’s that the path to success is rarely linear.

“I started out wanting to be an R&B solo act, and now I’m writing for Korean artists,” he laughs.

His journey proves that success can come in unexpected forms, and it’s often the detours that lead to the most fulfilling destinations.

In the coming years, he’s determined to balance writing for global stars with releasing his own projects.

“There’s so much more music I want to share with the world, and this time, I want to be the voice behind it.”
