a’ Becket (or Beckett, as she originally spelled her name) got her start as an artist in Portland, Maine and moved on to new venues in Boston, New York, Bar Harbor, and St.Augustine.
Although her work and legacy are obscure today, Becket was a pioneer professional woman painter and arguably the first woman to build a career as a landscape painter by popularizing the Barbizon style in America. Maria A' Becket was a well listed American painter who is cited in many American art references of her era.
At this time she changed her name to A’ Becket. Maria A’ Becket was a woman artist far ahead of her time; her palette is strong dense, deep with greens, burnt sienna, deep blues, and a mature loose brushstroke that one seldom acquires in a short artistic career displaying her natural talent as well as the experience gained by studying with the masters of early impressionism.
His paintings are exhibited and sold through regional galleries and juried shows, and he teaches at the New Hampshire Institute of Art and Chester College of New England.

Maria a'Becket (1839-1904) was an influential American painter recognized for her significant contributions to the art world during the 19th century.
William Morris Hunt was one of the first to embrace and promote the Barbizon style in America; Hunt had been studying art in Paris and was in search of a more spontaneous way of handling paint when he came across Millet’s The Sower and purchased it for display in Boston. It was the most destructive fire at the time in American history; it consumed around two-thousand buildings and left almost ten-thousand of the city’s thirteen-thousand citizens homeless.
In 1865 she studied with Homer Dodge Martin and later with William Morris Hunt in Boston. This innovative style contributed to her reputation as a pioneering landscape painter.
