I specifically loved the use of fabrics and colors worn on the king.
Gersha: There was a line in the script that said something to the extent of “the Earth is blessed by the king’s feet.” I remember reading that and wondering, “wow, who’s going to play this King?” Then when I learned it was John Boyega, I was so excited as he just embodied that persona.
For the gold mustard costume, it was scripted that he was wearing that motif of the crocodile.
One of the things I love about Viola is whenever you fit her, and she’s really happy with something, her face lights up!
I’m still very honored that I got this opportunity and I got to work with these people. Apparently, they would unweave the threads and either re-weave them into their own fabrics or embroider with them. She was willing to do whatever she needed to do. It was such a gift. That’s what I was going for.
Spencer:Well, it certainly came across that way!
More so on the higher-ranked soldiers because they would’ve gotten trinkets from the king when they’d done well in battle.
Spencer: While the Agojie costumes are inherently uniform, it seems like with each costume, there was a level of personalization. It’s definitely keeping us on our toes.”

I like the idea of giving them freedom in that way, the ability to pick and choose for their character like they would in real life. I loved working with Viola. We also had this idea of personalizing their costumes. There were a lot of really great artisans that we worked with. They don’t have any scarring.
Because of this realization, we had to pivot.
Picard was an attempt at slowly branching out, introducing a less episodic format focusing on the titular character’s final(?) journey while still having some character comebacks to anchor the show into nostalgia. Director Olatunde Osunsanmi delivered a thrilling tale that has the right balance of humor, high stakes, and fun action, but the real highlight of Section 31 lies within its spectacle of garments.
We knew what the Agojie were going to wear underneath these breastplates, which was going to be the bandeau in the halter, so we were able to sort it all out.
We also found this other really great book that was from 1906, I believe. It’s quite laborious, but it looks amazing. I think as a black woman telling the story, you have that connection.
So we decided that we would keep a breastplate for her. John Boyega plays King Ghezo with such style. Thank you!
