Professional career
Reid was the Australian Representative to the United Nations Forum on the Role of Women in Population and Development, held in New York in February 1974.

She also led the Australian delegation to the Mexico World International Women’s Year Conference, 1975, and was the Australian Representative to the United Nations forum on the Role of Women in Population and Development, 1974.
Reid helped resource community initiatives and women’s services such as women’s refuges, rape crisis centres, women’s health centres, child care, and working women’s centres.

Reid has addressed many conferences as keynote speaker, and her speaking engagements and extensive publication record have been focussed particularly in the areas of HIV education and women in development.
In 2001 Reid was made an Officer of the Order or Australia for work nationally and internationally on women and on the HIV epidemic; in the same year she was also named on the Centenary of Federation Honour Role of Women: Firsts and Founders, Victoria.

Reid has had a long career with the United Nations, including milestones such as Founding Director of the United Nations Development Programme HIV and Development Program in New York from 1992 to 1997), Director of the United Nations Development Programme Division for Women in Development from 1989 to 1991 and Founding Director of the United Nations Asian and Pacific Centre for Women and Development in Tehran, Iran from 1977 to 1979.[4]
She is a visiting fellow at the Gender Relations Centre and the School of International, Political and Strategic Studies of the College of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University.[5]
Reid continues with her development practice and is also Senior Adviser to the Collaboration for Health in Papua New Guinea, a Public-Private Partnership for Health.
As part of her work with Collaboration for Health in Papua New Guinea and the ANU Gender Relations Centre in 2002 Reid convened and chaired an International Roundtable on Increasing Access to HIV Care and Treatment in Resource Poor Settings.
The organisations Reid consults with includes the UN System, where she is involved in capacity building for a unified United Nations System response to the HIV epidemic as well as national HIV policy development and implementation.
Honours
In 2001 Reid was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia "for service to international relations, particularly through the United Nations Development Program, to the welfare of women, and to HIV/AIDS policy development, both in Australia and internationally".[6] She was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia in 1996[7] and received a citation in the Centenary of Federation Honour Roll of Women in 2014.

She went on to Somerville College, Oxford University, England where she gained a Bachelor of Philosophy in 1970.
She returned to the Australian National University as a Philosophy tutor and with Murray Goot published Women and Voting Studies: Mindless Matrons or Sexist Scientism? She then worked as Principal Officer in the United Nations Secretariat for the 1980 World Conference of the Decade for Women.
