She attended secondary school and teacher training college at Senior and Teacher Training Schools in Agogo first. They’d stop cars. In her autobiography, she explained: “I decided on the three colours of red, gold and green because of the geography of Ghana. In the light of her immense contribution to the game, the first hockey stadium in Ghana was named after her.

How do you even sum up the life of a courageous woman like Theodosia?
It was during her tenure as president that Ghana qualified for the world hockey tournament and the hockey Olympic Games. Her older sibling, Ernest Victor Asihene (1915–2001), was an artist and scholar who became the dean of the College of Art and the pro-vice chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
In 1927, T. Okoh started her education in Effiduase, in the now Ashanti region, where her father had been posted as the minister to the Presbyterian Church.
All I know is that he and a couple of his colleagues decided to come back so they went to London and then came to Accra.

Theodosia Salome Okoh (née Theodosia Salome Abena Kumia Asihene) was the artist who designed Ghana’s national flag, which was first hoisted by Kwame Nkrumah on the country’s Independence Day on 6 March 1957. He was one of those people who would say things like “I’m a civil servant I’m here to serve” so he was fine and we were fine.
Okoh came to design Ghana’s national flag through an open competition. There may have been more to the story but again I was just a child. Her grandson, Ian Jones-Quartey (1984), acclaimed US animator, stated in 2024 that “ [his] Grandmother is one of [his] greatest inspirations.”

But again I was only 11 years old so I was reading other stuff. After that she studied art at Achimota School, where her natural talent blossomed into formal training in Fine Arts.
Apart from the flag, Theodosia was also a pioneering educator, philanthropist, and founding figure in Ghanaian sports. If those things weren’t done in the First Republic, I don’t know where we would have been.
Black Star: Stands for freedom of Africa and unity. A lot has changed from then since it was so close to independence and being a recent colony the British influence was definitely there. She was a national icon, a stateswoman, a symbol of female empowerment, and a pioneer of Ghana's freedom journey. I’m sure there were some civil servants who were charged with various things but my dad was always very upstanding so he was fine and the new government gave him a new job.
I don’t know what they were searching for. She was the fourth of eight children. T. Okoh died the following year.
