His stepmother, Sitawanti Kaur, played a significant role in his upbringing.
He had three half-brothers – Surinder Singh Kohli, Daljit Singh Kohli, and Surjeet Singh Kohli – all involved in politics. His stepmother was very affectionate to him, and soon, he developed a good bond with her. In 2004, during the 14th Lok Sabha elections, the Indian National Congress (INC) Party formed a United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and won over the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
He achieved first class with the first position in class 12th and first class in 10th.
