Howard returned to Nashville with a job on the Grand Ole Opry fiddling with Cowboy Copas until he joined Roy Acuff’s Smoky Mountain Boys whom he played with until he died, August 1, 1987.

Howdy Forrester was “the Fritz Kreisler of Country Fiddlers”. He also composed “Memory Waltz” which is a favorite of the fiddlers today and often heard in the Grand Champion Division.

Howdy is one of the most respected fiddlers in country and bluegrass music. He grew up as the youngest of four brothers. Real name: Howard W. Forrester. At the age of eleven Howard contracted rheumatic fever. Forrester died at his home in Nashville.

Membership

He was a long-time member of Roy Acuff"s Smoky Mountain Boys.

His father, grandfather and Uncle Bob all played the fiddle. They played on the Grand Ole Opry as well as on KVOO in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Howard landed a job in show business. In 1960, he recorded a solo album called Fancy Fiddlin" Country Style for the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer subsidiary Cub label.

In 1964, Forrester left the Smoky Mountain Boys to join the Acuff-Rose Artists Corporation.

He continued to record solo albums during the 1970s and 1980s.

The family moved to Nashville. Every fiddler wanted to emulate his style and learn his tunes. During the long recovery he learned to play the fiddle. Howdy also made a solo album called “Fancy Fiddlin’ Country Style”. He also made recordings with Flatt & Scruggs in the early 1950s.

He played more than 38 years on the Grand Ole Opry. A book was written about Howdy called “Fiddler of the Opry – The Howdy Forrester Story”.

Howard “Howdy” Forrester will be inducted into The National Fiddler Hall of Fame in 2015.

He and his wife Billie “Sally Ann” Forrester played for Bill Monroe, Howdy on the fiddle and Sally Ann on the accordion.

Later in his career he managed Acuff-Rose Artists Corporation, a Nashville booking agency.

After Forrester"s discharge from the United States Navy in 1946 he returned temporarily to Monroe.

Soon he moved to Dallas to join Georgia Slim Rutland and the Texas Roundup performing at KRLD-Department of Administration and Management. In 1950, he joined Cowboy Copas before becoming a full-time member of Roy Acuff and His Smoky Mountain Boys in 1951.

Died August 1, 1987. After some time Howdy moved to Dallas and played with fiddler Robert “Georgia Slim” Rutland on the KRLD’s Texas Roundup Show.
