Djauhari Oratmangun has been the director-general for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) since February 2009.
During his prior posts in New York, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and Russia, he tackled many issues including human rights, environment, trade, and investment, as well as digital economy. As for myself, after completing high school in Maluku, I decided to further my studies in a bigger city. With an impressive background in addressing diverse issues such as human rights, environment, trade, investment, and digital economy, he brings valuable expertise to the council.
Mr. Oratmangun received a degree in economics at the University of Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta. I thought this would be a possible career option because I had wanted to go abroad while serving the nation. He also served as director for multilateral economic cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as director for United Nations economic, development, and environmental affairs.
Djauhari Oratmangun, born on July 22, 1957, currently serves as the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the People’s Republic of China and Mongolia. We lived in Sulawesi and Maluku, far away from Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. When I was in grade 9, I read an article on Kompas (a local newspaper) about the the life of a diplomat, he was in permanent mission of the Republic of Indonesia, at the United Nations (UN) in New York.

Dr. His efforts have been instrumental in promoting digital advancement in Indonesia, as he actively engages in events, lobbying, consulting, education, and advocacy initiatives. Mr. Oratmangun joined the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in 1984 and was posted at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia in New York and of the Republic of Indonesia in Geneva.

Upon reading an article about life as an ambassador in a local newspaper, he immediately set his sights on the diplomatic world. He is also the Indonesian permanent representative to ASEAN. He has since dedicated himself to his country—more than 30 years of bridging nations and people, promoting diversity and inclusivity at the same time.Oratmangun currently serves as the Ambassador of The Republic of Indonesia to the People’s Republic of China and Mongolia.
He is known for his significant contributions to fostering international relationships, particularly between China and Indonesia, with a focus on promoting bilateral cooperation in the area of environmental protection technology.
