George's Chapel in Windsor. This early connection laid the groundwork for their lifelong partnership marked by devotion and support. The family broke up. Many of Philip's family members remained in Germany, including his sisters, who married into German aristocratic circles.

After graduating in 1939, Philip attended the Royal Naval College, where he excelled.

Philip's dedication extended beyond the title of Duke of Edinburgh; he embraced royal duties with vigor. The 13-year-old Elizabeth developed a crush on Philip during the trip. After ascending the throne, the couple had two further children: Prince Andrew, Duke of York, born in 1960, and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, born in 1964.

The Duke's interests

Prince Philip was particularly interested in science, industry, and engineering.

In 1942 he became the ship's First Lieutenant at the unusually early age of 21.

In 1952 he was promoted to Commander, but his naval career came to an end on the death of his father-in-law, King George VI.

Second World War

Aged 17 Prince Philip joined the battleship HMS VALIANT, which fought in the Battle of Cape Matapan. Shortly after his birth, his maternal grandfather, Prince Louis of Battenberg, died in London.

An official inquest found no evidence of conspiracy, however, and the crash was ruled accidental.

Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren

Prince Philip has eight grandchildren: Prince William, Prince Harry, Peter Phillips, Zara Tindall, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

He was released from the London Clinic on June 17, following more than a week in the hospital.

In early 2015, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott made Philip a knight affiliated with the Order of Australia for his decades of royal service. Firstly, and as any one who knows the Duke will testify, he is possessed of one of the sharpest (and, it must be said, wickedest) senses of humour in the Royal Family.

Prince Philip left Gordonstoun in 1939, but the pioneer spirit it had fostered in him soon found another home: the Royal Navy.

Prince Philip's naval career

Prince Philip joined the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1939, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Prince Louis, who was Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord.

After completing his initial training under the auspice of Best Cadet of his entry, Prince Philip spent six months in the Indian Ocean as Midshipman aboard the battleship HMS RAMILLIES in 1940.

Prince Philip was subsequently promoted to sub-lieutenant and appointed to the destroyer HMS WALLACE.

However, their bond flourished upon their marriage at Westminster Abbey, where Elizabeth became Queen, and Philip transitioned to his role as Duke of Edinburgh, embracing new responsibilities with unwavering loyalty. When the moment came to look around for a suitable secondary school, his family decided that, in the interests of providing him with a truly international education, the Prince should experience academic life in another country.
