Bhaikaka believed that capital does not only consist of monetary resources but also of intellect, experience, efficiency, appropriate psychological attitude, and even work, for these brought together would constitute a resource greater than any of these elements singly.

He received his education in Sojitra, followed by Vadodara, and subsequently at the University of Pune from where he secured a Diploma in Civil Engineering. As the President of the Municipality, he initiated a fund-raising drive and mobilised an army of volunteers to move supplies to the affected areas. He took care to guide the university to the best of his abilities along with Shri Gordhanbhai Patel of Shri Ramakrishna Seva Mandal.

Their team work helped them strengthen their bond of trust and resulted in lasting friendship. There are 31 PG courses available in the affiliated colleges/institutions. Between 1959 and 1993, he was a member of the Senate and Syndicate of Sardar Vallabhbhai Vidyapith and later Sardar Patel University. He brought relief to the people much before any official assistance could arrive which, when received, was not required.

Shri Motibhai Amin established Charotar Education Society at Anand but with its headquarters in Petlad on 17 April 1916 with Shri Amabalal M Patel as Secretary. He motivated successive generations of students to develop good reading habits. Recognition of his engineering skills came in the form of the position of Executive Engineer in the Special Roads Division in Sindh.

Bhaikaka was thus at the peak of his career as an Engineer when he sought premature retirement from Government Service in 1940 at the behest of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and joined Ahmedabad Municipality as Chief Engineer.

Following his retirement from Indian Civil Services, he was appointed as the Chairman of Gujarat Electricity Board by the Government of Bombay in 1958. He returned the same year, skipping the Continental tour, never to leave India till his death in 1950, at the age of 75.

He was a successful criminal lawyer in Ahmedabad where, in 1915, he took the first step towards public life when he joined The Gujarat Sabha.

It was truly a first for India – an organisation for Indians by Indians.

In 1928 he resigned from the Ahmedabad Municipality to lead the Bardoli ‘no tax’ campaign, to fight the unjust tax increase imposed despite several years of drought. Elected to the sixth and eighth Lok Sabha from Sabarkantha Parliamentary Constituency on a Janata Party ticket, he served as Union Finance Minister under the then Prime Minister Shri Morarji Desai in the Janata Party Government in 1977, and subsequently as the Union Home Minister under Shri Chaudhary Charan Singh for a brief period in 1979 in his short-lived government in the 8th Lok Sabha.

He began his career in engineering as a Supervisor in Mehsana, and gradually rose to become an Overseer in Dhulia in the then Bombay Province, and to become Assistant Engineer in a sub-division of Pune. A year after completing his three-year term as Vice Chancellor, Bhaikaka resigned as Chairman of Charutar Vidya Mandal and launched into politics as the head of the Gujarat unit of the newly formed Swantantra Party.

It was accepted by Bipinbhai Dahyabhai Patel, Sardar’s grandson. The Express Highway between Ahmedabad and Vadodara has further reduced the time taken in travelling to slightly over an hour, and half an hour from Ahmedabad and Vadodara respectively.

Vallabh Vidyanagar is about 5 kms from Anand and 2 kms from Karamsad, the native place of Sardar Patel.
