Recently, scientific research on this topic has been growing rapidly, as scholars from diverse disciplines, including linguistics, cognitive science, music cognition, and neuroscience are drawn to the music-language interface as one way to explore the extent to which different mental abilities are processed by separate brain mechanisms.

His book, Music, Language, and the Brain (Oxford University Press, 2008), won an ASCAP Deems Taylor Award. In his spare time, Dr. Patel enjoys playing his guitar, golfing, hiking, and spending time with family.

Aniruddh (Ani) D.

Patel is a cognitive neuroscientist at Tufts University, where he conducts research on music and the brain in the Department of Psychology. Accordingly, the relevant data and theories have been spread across a range of disciplines.

In the first comprehensive study of the relationship between music and language from the standpoint of cognitive neuroscience, Aniruddh D.

Patel challenges the widespread belief that music and language are processed independently. Training in Internal Medicine has helped him be confident in treating patients with multi system disorders while giving him an opportunity to pursue a career in Gastroenterology. He is a past president of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition and, in 2016, was appointed a senior fellow in the Azrieli Program in Brain, Mind & Consciousness at CIFAR.

This volume provides the first synthesis, arguing that music and language share deep and critical connections, and that comparative research provides a powerful way to study the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying these uniquely human abilities.

BIO:

Dr Aniruddh Patel grew up in Gujarat India until his 13th birthday, at which time he moved with his family to Greenville SC.

His interest in Gastroenterology budded as an undergraduate student researching the causes of cachexia in mice with colon cancer and continued throughout medical school and residency. He was recently named a Guggenheim Fellow.

So You Think He Can Dance? (Harvard Gazette, 7/8/19)

.

If he were not a physician, Dr.

Patel would have pursued a career in Nutritional Science due to his interests in severe illnesses causing malnutrition. Whether it is a patient with a disease as benign viral gastroenteritis or as serious as colon cancer, he feels honored to have the opportunity to provide medical and emotional comfort to his patients while being able to continually expand his base of knowledge in this field.

The book will provide a coherent framework and research program for evolutionary studies of human musical behavior.

Patel received a BA in biology from the University of Virginia and a PhD in organismic and evolutionary biology from Harvard University. His primary work is with humans, and more recently, he has also been studying how other animals process music as a window into the evolutionary foundations of music cognition.

At Radcliffe, Patel is writing a book about the evolution of music cognition, synthesizing research on how animals process music and theories of human gene-culture coevolution.

Since Plato's time, the relationship between music and language has attracted interest and debate from a wide range of thinkers.
