Early life
Marie Josephine Leopoldine Bracken was born on August 9, 1876 in Victoria, Hong Kong.

The bearer of this letter is Miss Josephine Leopoldine Taufer whom I was at the point of marrying, counting on your consent, of course. Her mother died shortly after childbirth, and Josephine was adopted by her godfather, George Taufer, an American or British engineer depending on the source.
