In 1915 when Gandhiji returned from South Africa he had established his ashram at Kochrab near Ahmedabad. Gandhiji and other Congress leaders were imprisoned in Aga Khan Palace near Pune. He was deeply disturbed by the exploitation and began connecting with local peasants and workers.

Throughout his life, he earned a modest income primarily through his legal career, particularly during his early years in South Africa where he established a successful legal practice. He broke the law, which had deprived the poor man of his right to make salt .This simple act was immediately followed by a nation-wide defiance of the law.
