In 1804, at age 19, he discovered a new moss and became a botanical book illustrator for Dawson Turner. The boy grew up and became caretaker of the Pasteur Institute until age 64. During the Civil War, the area grew rich shodding the Union Army. He determined that this crystalline substance was silicon carbide. He was, however, a stimulating and versatile popular lecturer.
He also made key advances in electrochemistry and was famous for his clear, accessible lectures that inspired generations of scientists.
