yigal ozeri biography

Ozeri pays careful attention to the soft tonalities of the body, the subtleties of drapery, the play of both diffused and focussed light across form and landscape and the rendering of the variegated textures of surface. Representing a significant evolution in the artist’s practice—one of the most dramatic shifts in his approach to painting thus far.

At this point all kinds of questions and curiosities arise. A veteran of many international exhibitions, his paintings feature in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, the Jewish Museum of New York, The Israel Museum, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Albertina in Vienna.

His emphatically romantic subjects mine a seam of closely-related female characters.

Are these simply highly accomplished portraits or are these women also allegorical figures?

Yigal Ozeri's work articulates the attractions of the transient fragility of the human form. He is a 'photo-realist' painter, in particular of beautiful women in landscapes. They allude to an art-historical cast list of classical nymphs, dryads, Botticelli goddesses and Pre-Raphaelite muses.

His work is featured on the cover, and included in the book Photorealism and the Digital Age. He is currently in a traveling Museum show titled 50 Years of Hyperrealistic Painting that was showcased in a number of venues including: Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, and Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao. With tinges of Pre-Raphaelite aesthetics, Ozeri brings an ethereal and uninhibited sensibility to his paintings.

His portraits denote art historical foundations in romanticism, while also offering contemporary notions of sensual femininity.

Rooted in Carl Jung's concept of anima, Ozeri's depictions of a revitalized connectivity to nature prompt a confrontation of subconscious effeminate identity, and reinstate the beauty of innocent authentic experience.

His sylph-like models are contemporary iterations of such enduring archetypes, strategically placed in evocative settings.

His painstaking practice translates it into something immanently 'real', preserving a record of that which passes too quickly.
