In Russia Mamyshev-Monroe was primarily represented by XL gallery, but ut the exhibition that eventually became his last show took place in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. “Polonius” photo series was dedicated to the play and was shown in the 8th Moscow International Biennale of “FASHION AND STYLE IN PHOTOGRAPHY 2013”.

Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe (1969–2013), the man of a thousand faces, was a central figure in the generation of artists who came to prominence in Leningrad in the 1980s.
In commemoration of the artist, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art has announced that admission to his current exhibition at the institution will be free for the remainder of its run.

Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe. He drew, photographed and made collages, and performed with a band named Popular Mechanics.
Mamyshev-Monroe was one of the first drag artists in Soviet Union.
Mamyshev-Monroe died in 2013 in Bali, Indonesia, where he used to stay for extended periods of time in the 2000s.

Russian artist Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe, who of late became a social media icon for gay rights in his home country, has died at the age of forty-three.
In his lifetime, he participated in a few group exhibitions and performance events in Finland.
Curated by Kiasma, the exhibition is produced in cooperation with the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.

A story of great tragedy became a story of absurdity. His name is borrowed from his idol, Marilyn Monroe.Russian Stardust at Kiasma showcases a number of iconic images and videos by Mamyshev-Monroe from the 1990s and 2000s.

One performance was rather humorous when Mamyshev-Monroe took on the the role of Polonius, a king`s servant, in an experimental play titled “Polonius”. In 2010, after presenting a series of portraits of government officials in drag, the artist was brutally beaten in the streets; he used this incident to bring international attention to the homophobia rampant in Russia by documenting his recovery on Facebook.
He was found drowned in his pool at the age of just 43.
First solo show in Finland
The exhibition at Kiasma is Mamyshev-Monroe’s first solo show in Finland. The play opened in December 2012 and was a hit, was was expected to continue this April but it didn`t happen because On March 16th Mamyshev-Monroe drowned in a hotel swimming pool on an island in Bali.

The cause of death is suspected to be murder: The artist was found drowned in a shallow swimming pool while on vacation in Bali, notes Baibakov Art Projects.
Monroe emerged in the late 1980s and ’90s as one of the first video artists of the post Soviet era. He passed away at the age of 44 and was known as a master of impersonation.
During his art career Mamyshev-Monroe portrayed various public figures from political leaders, pop icons, and characters from fairy tales. “Putin”. and starred in a media art project called “The Pirate TV” in late 80s where he became the first drag queen in the Soviet Union.

He performed for photograph sessions, films, and bohemian parties. Photograph. Photograph. Whatever he did while he was playing his roles, if he sang, danced, read monologues, it always was a great show. “Lenin”. With his comrades he founded a media art project entitled Pirate TV that parodied official Soviet television programming and broadcast news of art life in Leningrad.
