Stella Ting-Toomey

Stella Ting-Toomey, PhD, is Professor of Human Communication Studies at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). Dr. Ting-Toomey has delivered major keynote speeches on mindful intercultural communication in the United States and internationally.

She has lectured widely throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe on the theme of mindful intercultural conflict competence. She is the 2008 recipient of the 23-campus wide CSU Wang Family Excellence Award, and the 2007–2008 recipient of the CSU-Fullerton Outstanding Professor Award. Dr. Ting-Toomey’s sojourning and immigrant experiences—as an international student departing from Hong Kong and arriving at Iowa City, and from Iowa City to Seattle, and then from Seattle onward to New Brunswick, Tempe, and Fullerton—together with her daily contact with culturally diverse students at CSUF, have enriched her theorizing and researching journey.

Stella Ting-Toomey(PhD, University of Washington) is a professor of human communication at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF).

She is the author or editor of 17 scholarly books, two instructional manuals, two interactive student resource guides, and more than 120 articles and chapters. She is a recipient of the CSU Wang Family Excellence Award and the CSUF Outstanding Professor Award. Her publications have also appeared in the International Journal of Intercultural Relations, Communication Monographs, Human Communication Research, and The International Journal of Conflict Management, among others.

Dr. Ting-Toomey’s teaching passions include intercultural conflict theory and practice and intercultural communication training.

She has published numerous books and over more than 100 articles/chapters on the topics of intercultural conflict competence and ethnic identity negotiation process. She has also conducted many training workshops for corporations, universities, and non-profit organizations in the area of intercultural competence practice.

Ting-Toomey’s research publications have appeared in the International Journal of Intercultural Relations, Human Communication Research, Communication Monographs, and Communication Research, among others.

Her research program focuses on testing the conflict face-negotiation theory and fine-tuning the cultural/ethnic identity negotiation model.  She is the author and editor of 15 books, most recently: Understanding Intercultural Communication (with Leeva Chung; Roxbury, 2005), Managing Intercultural Conflict Effectively (with John Oetzel; Sage, 2001), and The Sage Handbook of Conflict Communication (with John Oetzel; Sage, 2006).Dr.
