Maqbool Fida Husain

Maqbool Fida Husain (17 September 1915 – 9 June 2011) commonly known as M.F. Husain, was an Indian painter and Film Director. Two years later, many of his paintings were vandalized and his house attacked. Husain never made it back to his motherland and the debates surrounding his exile continued for many days even after his demise.

Childhood and Early Life

In 1952, his first solo exhibit happened in Zurich. Talking about his self-imposed exile and death outside of India painter Akbar Padamsee said that it was a “pity that a painter as important as Husain had to die outside his own country because of a crowd of miscreants”.

M. Husain and other artists during the time saw partition as a transformation in Indian modern art.

More often than not, various Hindu nationalist groups targeted him for hurting religious sentiments. Deeply hurt by the violent protests in India against him, he could not fathom the anger behind them. He was advised not to go back and the idea saddened him. The free spirit of horses can be extensively seen in his works. Soon, the movement gained recognition and the group grew in strength, which ultimately became a turning point in the history of Indian art.

In 2004, he made a film titled ‘Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities’, which had actress Tabu in the lead. But it’s made no difference to him.

Somewhere deep in his heart, Husain is an ascetic person. However, the government’s decision was questioned by various organizations and it eventually led to a major controversy.

Recognition

The Government of India appointed Husain to a term in the Rajya Sabha, in recognition of his contribution to art.

Besides posing the challenges of a new medium for him, Gajagamini has been an enriching experience, making him take “revolutionary” decisions. An experience that is reflected In his works as well.

Husain was a great admirer of actress Madhuri Dixit and even considered her as his muse. However, the painting was later sold at an auction for Rs 80 lakh.
