Born in 1971 in Battambang, Cambodia

Lives and works in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

In 1979, when the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia led to the ousting of the Khmer Rouge regime, he fled with his family to Thailand, spending four years in refugee camps before immigrating to the United States.

In a series of wall reliefs from 2012, he returns to the format of painting, rendering hybridized, abstract compositions in materials derived from his sculptural practice by infusing burlap canvases (rice sacks) with Cambodian soils for pigments, sealing them with beeswax and damar resin, and setting them in three-dimensional bamboo grids.

    sopheap pich biography of william

Since the start of the pandemic, he has been preoccupied with repurposed aluminum of pots and pans that he collects and buys from local recycling depots. Pich’s childhood experiences during the genocidal conditions of late 1970s Cambodia had a lasting impact on his work, informing its themes of time, memory, and the body. Memories of traveling vast distances on foot and witnessing the devastation of war — broken bodies, ravaged landscapes, abandoned artillery, and ruined buildings — underpin his sculptural practice.

Light. A subtle tension exists between the precise linearity of the impressions of the sticks and the irregularities caused by the natural texture of the bamboo, variations in the surface of the work table, and changes in pressure of the artist’s hand. In 2003, he established the artist group Saklapel, and launched the acclaimed exhibition Visual Art Open (2005) in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.

They consist of bamboo grids covered with strips of burlap salvaged from used rice bags that had been patched by previous owners with old fabrics and colorful bits of plastic twine, with added layers of encaustic. In 1990 he entered the University of Massachusetts to study medicine, later transferring to the Department of Art, graduating in 1995.

While Pich studied painting, earning a BFA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1995), and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1999), he turned his attention to sculpture after returning to Cambodia in 2002. This was followed by The World Outside (2019), an exhibition of floor-standing and wall-hanging sculptures, mainly organic in form, that make use of a diverse array of natural materials, including goat hide, stone, antler, and naturally curved bamboo stalks, as well as Pich’s characteristic strips of rattan and bamboo.

The passage of time is recorded as the ink slowly fades from the sticks after repeated pressings. William
