22, 1639, d. Racine was primarily a tragedian, producing such "examples of neoclassical perfection" as Phèdre, Andromaque, and Athalie, although he did write one comedy, Les Plaideurs, and a muted tragedy, Esther, for the young.

Racine's playsdisplayed his mastery of the dodecasyllabic alexandrine; he is renowned for elegance, purity, speed, and fury, and for what RobertLowelldescribed as a "diamond-edge", and the "glory of its hard, electric rage".

He now reconciled his differences with the Jansenists atPort-Royal and, devoting himself to his new duties as royalhistoriographer -- a position to which he had been called by LouisXIV personally -- he abandoned secular drama. Jean Racine, baptismal name Jean-Baptiste Racine, was a French dramatist, one of the threegreatplaywrights of 17th-century France, and an importantliteraryfigure in the Western tradition.

He did write one comedy, Les Plaideurs, and a muted tragedy, Esther, for the young. His last two plays,Esther (1689) and Athalie (1691) were on biblicalthemes, written for performance by students at a school for thesacred and secular education of young women.
