“Flores del Tehuanderloin,” commissioned by the SFAC/SF Dept. Oakland is dangerously welcoming. Like the craftspeople
who integrate life into the creation of ceramics and textiles—nothing
less than a certain form of magic—I embrace the imperfections of the
hand-made, the organic forms and vibrant colors which have the
power to remove the individual identity of the artist in favor of a more
universal expression of “folk art.”
By uniting the imagery of traditional Mexican folk art with the vernacular
of urban contemporary art, I’m trafficking in the nuanced relationship
between artistic tradition and global influences, in the process finding
the relationship between community and culture.
To some, it is the core of their identity.
Oakland is fresh walks in the redwoods. I was
convinced from an early age growing up in Cuernavaca, Mexico that
communities can be sustained through art making. Sur

In contrast, to other people, Oakland is brimming with potential opportunities. The lineage of west
coast mural work looms large in my practice: art functioning as a symbol
of resistance, transforming overlooked spaces into something beautiful ; a daily revolution in the form of creating.

“Ms.
I seek to create a multi-cultural dialogue that
explores the consistencies of visual culture throughout time, beginning
with ancient artisans and extending to contemporary artists. Oakland is underground party culture. Oakland wants to share, but the Town will not let one simply take.
Oakland does not give itself up easily.
To say you’re from Oakland, you have to be born (again) in Oakland.
To say you live in Oakland, nonetheless, gives one gravity and sense of identity that not many other places have.
Oakland offers its people the false sense that art is everywhere because Oakland drips with creativity.
But what makes Oakland unique to me?
My children have grown up in Oakland, so by default, I've also grown up in Oakland.
.
Oakland is the multicolored face of America but unlike any other place in America.Oakland is about struggle, but Oakland also offers solutions. of Public Works,

The core of my practice stems from my interest in locating folk art’s
place in a globalized world. Oakland is home.
In what ways has your personal story been shaped by Oakland?
Oakland is the place where I truly felt I put down roots.
