In the original setting El Amor Brujo has twelve parts, three using a contralto voice. No llegó a citar ninguna canción existente, sino que, a partir del conocimiento que adquirió sobre el lenguaje interno de esta música, construyó su propio universo sonoro.
Tras el estreno, Falla continuó trabajando en El amor brujo, desarrollando una nueva versión de la obra.
Esta revisión se interpretó por primera vez en 1916 junto al estreno de Noches en los Jardines de España. Falla did not quote actual folk songs, relying instead on his knowledge of the idiom to create original “folk art” stunning in its power and authenticity.
“Falla was able to bring flamenco into a classical context, establishing a roadmap for orchestral flamenco,” Garrido says.

Dance of Terror: Candela recalls the terror of living with a man she did not love, who was quite cruel to her, and fears that he may return because she is not sure he is securely dead.

Length: c. The outcome at first was a rather small “song and dance” which grew into a chamber ballet. La escritora trabajó junto al compositor en el libreto de una de las primeras obras que escribió a su vuelta: El amor brujo.
The ballet premiered at the Teatro Lara of Madrid on April 15, 1915. Durante esta estancia vivió por un tiempo con el matrimonio formado por los literatos María Lejárraga y Gregorio Martínez Sierra. While the ghost is distracted by Lucia, Candelas and Carmelo kiss, and then mock the ghost in the final dance (Dance of the Game of Love).
In telling the story from a flamenco perspective, choreographer/director Siudy Garrido has added a prologue in which the four principal characters are introduced by dancers, as well as a new sung character, a witch-like shaman.
También trabajó en un arreglo en forma de ballet, que mantuvo la orquestación de la segunda versión y se estrenó en París en 1923 en formato de concierto y en 1925 en su versión escénica. Se trataba de un encargo de la bailaora Pastora Imperio, construido sobre una leyenda andaluza propuesta por la madre de la artista flamenca: Rosario Monge, La Mejorana.
