Since then he has conducted at the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, La Scala Milano, and the opera houses of Chicago and Florence as well as at the Salzburg Festival.
Zubin Mehta made his debut as an opera conductor with Tosca in Montreal in 1963. Mehta turned both ensembles into first-class symphonies, raising ticket sales and visibility.
In 1978, Mehta began an engagement with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, considered by many the best ensemble of its kind in North America.
As a young violinist his main musical influence and inspiration was Jascha Heifetz. Education: Attended St. Xavier's College, Bombay; Vienna Academy of Music, beginning in 1954; and Accademia Chigiana, Siena, Italy, late 1950s. A pioneering figure in the Indian musical world, he founded the Bombay Symphony Orchestra in 1935, and was its Concertmaster (1935-1945) and conductor (1945-1955).
In 2016 the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples appointed Zubin Mehta as Honorary Music Director and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic honoured him in 2019 as Conductor Emeritus. Since 1985, Mehta has been chief conductor of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence.
In October 2019 he celebrated his farewell with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to which he has served for 50 years.
After a short period of pre-medical studies in Bombay, he left for Vienna in 1954 where he eventually entered the conducting programme under Hans Swarowsky at the Akademie für Musik. He expanded the Tatas into a world company.
