Trio Bulgarka (also known as ‘Three Golden Coins’, previously known as ‘Bulgarka Folk Trio’) is a Bulgarian vocal ensemble, consisting of Stoyanka Boneva, Yanka Rupkina and Eva Georgieva.

9. It was hard work, and we improvised Bulgarian harmonies onto her music. I’ve never worked with women on such an intense creative level, and it was something strange to feel this very strong female energy in the studio.
She grew up in a family for whom the Strandja Mountain folk songs were part of both work and pastime. With the Trio Bulgarka, she provided vocal harmonies on Kate’s albums The Sensual World and The Red Shoes.

Thus, Yanka was introduced to the special techniques of the Strandja singing by her grandmother. Her singing has warmth to it. They signed to record labels Bulgaria Balkanton and Hannibal in 1987. Born in a tiny village near the Black Sea port of Bourgas, and at the foot of the Strandja mountains – which give their name to her unique style of singing – it is the origin of her often melancholy songs, with their strange inherent optimism and hope for a better life to come, either here or in the next world.
