Engelbert Humperdinck was born Arnold George Dorsey in 1936 in Chennai (formerly Madras) in India, into a British Army family.
His father served in the British military, and his mother was an opera singer and taught the violin. He also appeared in a few films, including “The Love Machine” (1971) and “The Great American Traffic Jam” (1980).
In 2012 Engelbert Humperdinck represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest. Also in that year, Engelbert recorded a Christmas album Star of Bethlehem.

Engelbert has four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe for Entertainer of the Year, 63 gold and 24 platinum records and as one of only a handful of artists with a star on both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Las Vegas Walk of Fame.

Few people realise that it was Humperdinck, not Elvis, who made famous the sideburns and leather jumpsuits. Influenced by singers like Al Jolson and Frank Sinatra, Arnold started practicing the saxophone and playing in local clubs.
In the early 1960s, Arnold teamed up with his roommate and fellow musician, Gordon Mills, who became his manager. It was not a success, because he ended up in 25th position with only one point.
