Everything was designed for someone who is old. In the installation, the works were hung against a wall which had the Braille text behind it as a key. Gunnebo, both a public park and historic site, had as its centerpiece an elegant Palladian-style conservatory for exotic plants; erected in the 1700s, it burned down in the 1800s.
“They moved from a beautiful place in the country to the city due to health issues. We created a booklet with a descriptive narrative that people can use to educate themselves while enjoying the spaces. In the act of learning about their treatment, people regain some sense of control over their destinies.
What are you working on now?
I just returned from New York.
The text of the terrain is realized in the structure of these narratives, crafted by technical skill and quality materials to create a sanctuary grounded in space and time.
The privilege of success afforded by supportive communities sponsoring both private and public commissions has allowed Topher Delaney with her able business partner Calvin Chin to establish the Virgie Giles Foundation, a 501(c)3 for benefit of service.
Virgie Giles Foundation focuses on developing tangible policies of benefit in three specific areas of service.
Program A4AAA: Advocacy for Artists and Artisans focuses on supporting professional fabricators and designers who seek to transition their skill sets to unique expressions of art.
Program Dahlia focuses on creating public gardens which serve as sanctuaries.

“Healing to me is about opening portals and gaining balance. The soaring three-story space is enlivened by music, a pink cockatoo and a pair of Airedales. Delaney is noted for the innovative use of materials such as colored concrete, rubber, illuminated glass walls and recycled plastics. I went on garden tours and visited botanical gardens. She planted healing plants such as yucca, echinacea and salvia and identified them by their Latin names handpainted on 30-foot-long interlocking metal panels in various hues of green.
She has experimented with these forms in recent years; for an Architectural Digest Home Show in New York City she conceived them as works of Braille. Her style ranges from formal and traditional to funky and modernistic. She is an artist whose medium is landscape. This would celebrate the memory of those killed, and also be a gift of hope to the city.
Her lawyer-father’s clients included Franz Klein and Jackson Pollack; her French mother was an artist whose intimate friends included personalities like Dadaist artist Marcel Duchamp and actress Hope Reed. I’ve designed a memorial for those who died on September 11; not for the site of the World Trade Center, specifically, but for all of Lower Manhattan below Canal Street.
