In 1985, Houston released her first album, called Whitney Houston.

She was a backup singer with Chaka Khan and Lou Rawls and the lead vocalist on the Michael Zager Band's single "Life's A Party."

Houston's first recording as a featured vocalist was with the experimental jazz-funk ensemble Material; their 1982 album One Down placed Houston alongside such Avant-Gardes as Archie Shepp and Fred Frith.

The official cause of death was ruled an accidental drowning.

The news of her death came the day before the Grammy Awards, and the show included a special tribute to her. It was number one on the charts for a record-breaking 14 weeks. Her self-titled debut album, released in 1985, was an instant smash, making her a household name almost overnight.
