She pursued her acting career while also conducting private tuitions to sustain financially. She did not fear the societal norms that sought to limit women. Nutan accused her mother of misusing funds from their production company.

Nutan and Tanuja went on to become some of the most successful actresses of their time from the 1950s to the 1980s. She did the same role in her next movie Ram Rajya (1943), a film based on the life story of Ram, which was also successful.

It was the only movie on Ram that Mahatma Gandhi watched in his lifetime, and a private screening was arranged for him.

At her own death from cancer in 2000, Shobhna had seven granddaughters, one grandson, three great-granddaughters, and two great-grandsons.

Dimple Kariya

Dimple has a keen interest in history, cinema, and cultural studies, which fuels her curiosity.

She was active in her career in the 1950s when acting was a taboo, especially for women from elite, dominant social classes.

Shobhna Samarth was born on 17th November 1916 as Saroj Shilotri to Rattanbai Shilotri and Prabhakar Shilotri in Bombay, British India. He had a flying license, hired a plane and flew over my cottage, throwing stones with letters tied to them saying ‘I love you“, Shobhna Samarth recalls.

Director, producer, actor: Contributions to cinema

After acting as a lead actress in more than 50 films, she eventually became a producer and set up Shobhna Films.

Shobhna Samarth

Shobhna was born on 17 November 1916 in Bombay, British India, as Saroj Shilotri. Her mother Rattanbai acted in a Marathi movie Swarajyachya Seemewar (Frontiers of Freedom) in 1936.

In 1931, her family shifted to Bangalore because after her father’s business suffered losses.

She argued that she should pay tax only for her 30% share, while the remaining tax should be Shobhna’s responsibility. Even though the film did not perform well, her presence was instantly noticed. Her uncle was opposed to her joining films, and she and her mother moved out of his home (ironically his daughter and Shobhna's cousin Nalini Jaywant herself became an actress).

Shobhna claims in an interview that she did not know any Urdu at that time of filming, speaking the dialogues by rote and it was only later that she picked up the language. Back in Bombay, life was difficult for her.
