Born in Texas. Following her husband’s death on 6 December 1988, she took charge of his business affairs and dedicated herself to promoting his music to ensuing generations. The combination of Orbison's powerful, impassioned voice and complex musical arrangements led many critics to refer to his music as operatic, giving him the sobriquet "the Caruso of Rock." [1]

  • "What separates Orbison from so many other multi-octave-spanning power singers is that he can hit the biggest notes imaginable and still sound unspeakably sad at the same time.

But he didn’t have a Lefty Frizzell voice. I do, too.

Born in Texas. Were there any he emulated?
BO: I don’t think he emulated any singers. He wrote the same songs; he had the same arrangements, the same drum beats, the same violin arrangements, because it was Roy. I think Roy just needed someone else in the room. As a young man, he heard western swing and big band, but Roy knew he didn’t want to sing that music long before he went to Sun.

    Here’s young Roy at Sun.

He’s the lowest on the totem pole, and he doesn’t want to do the music that Sam Phillips wants him to do.

You could see that the writing relationships were the same.

“It’s Over” [written with Dees] is very much like “Only The Lonely.” It’s always the same core energy.

Barbara Orbison

Barbara Orbison (10 January 1950 – 6 December 2011) was a German-born United States-based entrepreneur, music producer/publisher, and the second wife of American musician Roy Orbison.

Barbara Anne Marie Wellhöner Jakobs was born in Bielefeld, Germany on January 10, 1950.Aged 18 years old, Barbara met the 32-year-old Orbison when he asked friends to introduce him to her at a nightclub in Leeds, England, during Orbison’s tour of Great Britain.

She was 61.

As administrator of her late husband’s estate, Barbara Orbison managed his legacy. Born in Texas. She worked with friend and fellow artist Jeff Lynne to put together the posthumous release of the King of Hearts album in 1992 (an album which was re-issued in 2007 by Sony BMG after they took charge of Virgin’s catalog in 2005) as well as other record projects.

Professional life

Orbison grew up in Texas and began singing in a rockabilly/country and western band in high school until he was signed by Sun Records in Memphis. But he needed that to really find out who he was. She assembled the four-CD “Authorized Bootleg Collection” (Orbison Records, 1999) from heretofore unissued 1969-80 concert tapes.
