After leaving Menudo, he returned to Puerto Rico, finished school, and celebrated his 18th birthday. Either way, Ricky stepped back from recording, focusing his energy on other pursuits. His greatest Spanish-language hits were compiled on La Historia (2001). In his five years with Menudo, Martin toured around the world, singing in several languages.
He was a member of the teen singing group Menudo until he turned 18. The album did reasonably well, reaching the top 10 of Billboard's album charts. He had become well-known in his native Puerto Rico and among the Latin/Hispanic community as a whole. This was followed two years later by Almas del Silencio, which contained new material sung in Spanish.
Martin was also featured on the cover of Time magazine and credited with helping to bring a growing Latin cultural influence into mainstream American pop music.
To add to the popular success of his debut English album and single, Martin was nominated in four categories at the Grammy Awards, held in February 2000.
His hits "Livin' La Vida Loca" and "The Cup of Life" continue to resonate on dance floors years after their release. The show proved so popular that he reprised the role in a movie version of the serial. During his hiatus, Ricky stockpiled over 60 songs, carefully curating the cream of the crop to wow fans who'd nearly given up hope of hearing new material from their idol.
The song launched Ricky Martin's international career.
Breakthrough
In 1995, Ricky Martin's album "A Medio Vivir" completely transformed how the English-speaking world saw Latin American music. Around this time, he also teamed with Joss Stone for the duet single, "The Best Thing About Me Is You," which proved to be a minor hit.In 1993, Ricky Martin released another album, "Me Amaras" ("You Will Love Me"), which was warmly received but didn't break through.
During an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show in November 2016, Martin announced his engagement to Jwan Yosef, an artist who was born in Syria and raised in Sweden. Upon becoming an adult, he opened his own bank account and moved to New York to embrace new opportunities.
Ricky got down on one knee and popped the question with the simple words, "Will you marry me?" Jwan said yes, and they tied the knot on January 11, 2018.
But life had other plans - before he could start his studies, Ricky was invited to join the Mexican musical Mama Ama el Rock ("Mama Loves Rock"). He auditioned three times for the teen singing group Menudo before finally earning a spot in 1984. A Mexican television producer spotted him on stage and cast him in the soap opera "Alcanzar una estrella" ("Reach for a Star").
Martin played Versace's longtime partner Antonio D’Amico, who was there the day that Versace was murdered.
Personal Life
Martin became a father with the birth of twin boys, Matteo and Valentino, via surrogate in 2008. The album flew off shelves with 22 million copies sold worldwide and boasted collaborations with Madonna and Meja, the infectious "Private Emotion" featuring Turkish sensation Sertab Erener, and of course, "Livin' La Vida Loca" – the track that would define Ricky Martin for years to come.
