Palm Springs’ first bond issue later provided additional classrooms, a library and a large auditorium which served as the city’s first theater.

The city purchased the facility as a cultural arts center, and it was dedicated in 1974 by then-Vice President Gerald Ford. We can, however, recall Ray Cree's "Ko-Ko" in the first "Mikado" in 1928, his "Duke-of-Plazo-Toro" in the "Gondoliers" of 1929 and again in 1948.

Much of his early efforts were spent ensuring there were teachers for the children of the village of Palm Springs. Usher said his children gave him “notes” before his Super Bowl halftime performance on Sunday. … Miss Finchy was a perfectionist, albeit a gentle and understanding one. Usher’s early life was marked by a deep connection to music and a relentless pursuit of his passion.

More than 20 teachers worked with Palm Springs children from 1893 until 1922.

Raymond Cree

But some other early educators not only persevered, but served with distinction—like Raymond Cree, who in 1907 became the Riverside County superintendent of schools.

To have known Ray Cree was indeed a privilege.

His performance was not what it would have been had he been fit, but it was none the less admirable, and gave me great delight.

IN “ST JOAN"

In non-musical plays we shall always remember with pleasure Ray Cree's interpretation of the part of "The Dauphin" in Shaw's "Saint Joan" in 1937, and also his part as "Feste" the clown in "Twelfth Night", a part which he played with outstanding skill in three separate productions, and in which he was able to use fully his vocal and acting powers.

All the artistry and coy humour, the nimble feet and sensitive hands, the smile, the tear, and unique dramatic ability of Ray Cree were epitomized in "Jack Point". I work also as a PR and Brand Specialist and aim to grow Creebhiils as a brand to reach mass audiences.
