The school did not just educate children but cared for their overall well-being. She is the first female child in her family to be educated, and suffered opposition and abuse from community elders and her own father because of this.
When she was 10 years old, she was shocked when her infant cousin died because the child’s illiterate mother had not been able to read the expiry date on his fever medicine.
This tragedy exposed the lack of awareness and education in the community. I was awarded the 2013 Women of Impact Award at the 4th Annual Women of the World Foundation's Summit & my efforts attracted attention of Chime for Change and Madonna, who pledged to support girl's education in Pakistan. The foundation recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with The NGO World Foundation to advance joint projects in education, adult literacy, and community development & mobilization and other impactful projects aimed at uplifting communities.
She was later a finalist for the 2016 Global Teacher Prize. Six non-formal schools were also launched, offering three-month crash courses for out-of-school youth who had missed traditional schooling, Recognizing that education was not just for children, adult literacy programmes were launched, teaching mothers to read and write so they could support their children's education.
