Philip Yale Nicholson is an American historian, retired educator and author of two significant monographs.

Nicholson served as a Professor of History at Nassau Community College and as an Adjunct Professor at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Long Island Extension. was promoted to Distinguished Teaching Professor in 2022. He is also a contributor of articles and reviews to periodicals, including American Neptune, New York Times, Newsday and Vermont History.

Membership

Nicholson was a member of the American Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, Long Island Industrial Relations Research Association.

In language that is clear and unpretentious, Labor's Story in the United States looks at American labor from the perspective of institutions and people: the rise of unions, the struggles over slavery, wages, and child labor, public and private responses to union organizing; all of these events and more are covered with a focus on the integral relationship between the strength of labor and the growth of democracy.

 He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Sciences from Hofstra University in 3 years, a Master’s of Arts degree in Sociology and a Juris Doctorate degree both from St. John’s University, a Master’s of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from SUNY Albany, and a Doctor of Education degree from Dowling College. In 1979, he was an Adjunct Professor at Adelphi University.

Through it all, he paints a vivid picture of the strength of labor movements and how they helped make the United States what it is today.

Education

In 1962, Nicholson received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Temple University.

He has received a Fulbright Scholar’s Award to lecture at the University of Malta Faculty of Law, and he has been a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge’s Institution of Criminology/Socio-legal Group. He also served for many years as President and Chief Negotiator of the Nassau Community College Federation of Teachers (NCCFT) and in other leadership positions at the college.

Besides, Nicholson authored numerous scholarly articles and reviews and published two significant monographs, Who Do We Think We Are?: Race and Nation in the Modern World (1999) and Labor's Story in the United States (2004), which has achieved international recognition and was published in a German-language edition.

Currently, Nicholson is a Professor Emeritus of History.

• Philip Yale Nicholson is a notable historian and educator.

   Dr. He is the 2020 recipient of Nassau’s Faculty Award for enhancing the college experience of students with disabilities, and the 2002 Faculty Appreciation Award for outstanding work with students from Hispanic origins.

  

  Nicholson also received many other professional awards and grants from such organizations, as the American Historical Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
