Over the years, Vai has collaborated with legendary musicians such as Frank Zappa, David Lee Roth, and Whitesnake. Prior to attending Berklee College of Music, Steve frequently jammed with his teacher Joe Satriani and played in numerous local bands.
For Vai, virtuosity and versatility are not mutually exclusive. At the time, Roth engaged in a war of words with the members of Van Halen; many commentators favorably compared Vai’s guitar-playing to Eddie Van Halen’s.
Following 1988’s popular Skyscraper Tour, Vai left David Lee Roth’s band. The 32nd note quick tempo pseudo-classical-baroque track (entitled Eugene's Trick Bag) with which Macchio wins the competition was composed by Vai, heavily based on Paganini's Caprice Op.
1 # 5, and has become a favorite apprentice-piece among many guitar students. This instrument inspired a revolutionary metal subculture that started in the mid ’90s. Then he joined former Van Halen front man David Lee Roth's group to record the albums Eat 'em and Smile and Skyscraper. They also use a humbucker-single coil-humbuckerpickup set-up and a locking tremolo bar.

In the film realm, Vai has credits including Executive Producer for the acclaimed 2008 Hank Garland biopic Crazy, in which he also appears as Hank Williams.
His career accomplishments have earned him honorary doctorates from Berklee College of Music and Musicians Institute. Vai’s contributions to guitar playing have made him a respected figure in rock and metal.

Steve Vai's journey in music began at a young age, showcasing his exceptional talent as a guitarist and composer.
These albums, along with their accompanying videos and arena tours, significantly enhanced Vai’s reputation and popularity. Steve recently teamed up with former David Lee Roth band member Bassist Billy Sheehan for a world tour. Also for Ibanez, Vai designed “The Universe,” the first commercial 7-string electric guitar.
The 2016 Long Island Music Hall of Fame inductee was voted the 10th “Greatest Guitarist” by Guitar World magazine and consistently lands among the best in various lists of the top guitarists of all time.

Steve Vai, born Steven Siro Vai, is an American guitarist and composer, born June 6th, 1960 in Long Island, New York (making him six years old on the sixth day of the sixth month in 1966, as he noted in the introduction to his guitar transcription book of Frank Zappa).
Along with these, a second series called “Under It All” was launched where Steve explores the more esotheric concepts.
Also launched in 2020 was Steve’s own Patreon channel, where a true potpourri of subjects are discussed: Musical lessons, Guitar techniques, Stories from the past, Riffs, Naked Tracks and more.
When growing up, the young Vai became interested in rock giants such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper (guitarist Glen Buxton), and Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page), leading him to take up the guitar.
After leaving Zappa in 1982 he moved to California where he recorded his first album “Flex-able” and performed in a couple of bands. He has created music for blockbuster films, bestselling video games, national sports franchises, and corporate brand initiatives.
In 2012, Vai embarked on an epic three-year tour spanning 253 engagements (including shows, concerts with various orchestras, & master classes) in 52 countries in support of his 16th solo album release, the critically acclaimed The Story of Light.
